In order for a car to be Acura Certified Pre-Owned, does it have to be bought at an Acura dealership?

I just bought a used 2005 Acura TSX from a used car dealer that is NOT an actual Acura dealer. They told me the car was Acura Certified Pre-Owned and even charged me an extra $3,000 or so. The 'maintenance required' light turned on the other day so I guess I have to take it in to get checked out. However, while searching for an Acura dealer close to where I live, I ran into an article that made it sound like only ACURA DEALERSHIPS can sell pre-owned certified Acuras. I hope I just mis-interpreted the article or else I'm not going to be a happy camper. If you have any knowledge on this please help!!!!!!

If per say they sold it at an auction as a certified then yes it could be certified. If you contact the manufacturer and ask them if it is indeed a pre owned certified they should be able to tell you. Due to the fact that they have to register it in the database as being certified. Can a dealer other than Acura certify it no but as I said they may have sold it at the auction, as it may not have had any interest at the dealership it may have come from. Just call Acura the number should be in your owners manual. Or research it on the web link listed below. Yes an Acura is made by Honda.

Without knowing all the details of your car (mileage, the name of the dealer you purchased, etc.), I am very skeptical that your car is Acura Certifed. Here's the link to the Acura Certified Pre-owned website. It shows the certification process.

If you have all the items listed on the website, then it is probably certified. If not, the dealer took you for an extra $3000. Of course a call to Acura should confirm if your car is certified.

  1. Only an Acura dealer can sell a certified pre-owned Acura product. An independent dealer cannot represent a vehicle as being Acura certified pre-owned. Plus, a vehicle sold at auction cannot be considered certified any more. Manufacturers maintain tight controls on what is certified pre-owned because of the warranty liabilities involved. Plus, there's no way certification on a 2005 Acura TSX would cost you $3,000 more. Dealer most likely ripped you off.
