If it's a brand new car you will more than likely have to order it. If, however, it's a used car you can drive it away so long as it has a current MOT, log book and you have arranged insurance cover (get a quote first - you will need car registration number, then ring back later if you buy the car and accept the quote) and have paid for it other than by cheque. :0)

hello im looking for a car as i have my test soon and i am now on the look out for a car. I have 1,000 so i know im not going to get anything special. I will only be using it to get to work and social. But i have my daughter and my mum to drive around so i need a big enough boot to fit shopping and baby items in. In many countries American cars are not sold and in order to import them into the country you have to pay an enormous tax somewhere between 50 to 100% the cost of the car itself. I don't think there is a major car company in the WORLD that gets it's money strictly from the country it is headquartered in. That is to say, if here in the U.S. someone bought a Honda, they wouldn't be making the Japanese rich. I would bet Honda is owned by mostly investors outside of Japan. It all depends how you look at it.

I sell Honda's, but was buying them many years before I sold them because of their Reliability and Car for the Money...
Many of my friends would complain about the 100k Mile bug in their "Domestic" brand cars....and here I am with a 94 EX Accord Coupe with 213k Miles on it with very few issues other than regular maintenance...and it still runs and looks great and gets 35 MPG....so I think it should be a matter of common sense and research moreso than where it was built.
(Mine was built in Marysville Ohio by the way)

That should be the amount you expect to get for your car from a dealership. Make sure you have your title handy so the trade-in process will go smoothly.
When you walk into a dealership and start talking prices. Never mention that you are going to trade-in a car up front. Just say, "I may be considering it". This way, they can't mess around with the final numbers before you agree on a final price for the new car. Once that's negotiated and agreed upon, then you bring up the fact that you would like to get your car appraised for a trade-in. Let their appraiser look at your car and give you an amount. If it's acceptable to you and the salesperson, then you're good to go. The value of your car will be deducted from the price of the new car. You will only have to pay tax on the difference that between your trade-in and the new car...not the full price of the new car.

After all that, tell him you have a trade. *No dealer how big Poker player he is, can't hide his disappointment on that!)
Make sure you get a fair price on your trade in. Use KBB as a ballpark but not as upper limit.
NEVER as in NEVER EVER had over the keys to the Trade in. Insist on accompanying while they take test Drive. Pocket the keys after they are done driving. You can hand them back once you got the price you wanted.

you should do more research, at the current price point buying a hybrid doesn't make the best financial sense. There are plenty of less expensive cars that get good gas mileage. Plus, you will always pay sticker or more for a hybrid. Furthermore, Hybrids do a fair amount of harm to the planet, think about the batteries. The nickel that is mined for them comes from one of the dirtiest places on earth. Also after the usable life of the battery, where does it go? its still toxic hundreds of years after the fact. Some people would say...recycle them...ok, that takes mass amounts of energy as well. More than you think it does. I applaud your effort to become more green. But you have to think about for the long run, right now hybrids are the "IT" thing. But there is no metric in place for understanding what will become of the 1st and 2nd generation batteries inside them. Until a power source is developed that is somewhat inert to environment long after its useful life, hybrids are not the way of the future.
Reply:Toyota is the top selling hybrid right now. Honda is setting it's sights on passing them in a year or so. Ford makes a fine product in it's Escape and Merc. Mariner, both mid. sized SUVs.

Compare prices with neighboring State or a dealer from smaller town in your area. If you are in a small town, try nearest bigger town. The Dealers from the other town would love to beat your local dealer to it.

For you car, I would offer something in the low to mid 17's, maybe $17200. It would be nice if you specified what type of car it is. This would be important because if the car was something such as the Dodge Nitro, you could go to the high 16's because they are not selling at all. If it was something hot like a Prius or Mini Cooper, you would not be able to get much off.
Find other dealers with similar cars near by and get a price by them. See if your dealer you are dealing with will match it. If they can't, by from the other dealer.

i work at a car dealership and my personal opion is never buy a car from an auction unless you are mechanically inclined. even if a car looks good does not mean it runs good. most of the cars at auctions are vehicles from whole sale dealers which means most of them buy the cars off dealership lots that would cost way more for the dealer to fix
then they would make selling it.

Personally, I would go with the smaller and better gas mileage one.
Gas is not going to ever get cheaper. It will stay high and the larger high priced Suv's will soon become totally uneconomical to drive and sit in the garages.

Reply:You're going to be hard pressed to find a 'smaller' SUV that will fit 0. Our Expedition does and let me tell you, it is EXPENSIVE to drive right now. It costs us about $70 to fill it up. We take our Subaru everywhere now and have found that we don't really NEED all of the room that we thought we did. It's nice to have the Expedition when we take the boat to the lake or when we're transporting Boy Scouts, but when we get rid of the boat, we're getting rid of the gas guzzling monster.

Ok, so my wife and I have finally decided to pull the trigger on a new car. Our car needs more in repairs than it will ever be worth, we can't afford a new car cash, and a used car will be about as nice as ours was when we first bought it (80,000 miles, just waiting for parts to break). We are looking for a 5 speed, 4 cylinder, basic car.
We are Ford people by heart but the Chevy Cobalt looks more and more appealing. (Especially with a 0% for 60 month finance plan and a 5 year/100,000 mile warranty).
What are your suggestions? I've read reviews, looked at prices, compared programs.
I've looked at Cobalts, Focuses, the Fit, the Yaris, the Hyundai Accent, and the Rabbit.
I understand trade and locale all play a part, but personal opinions, reviews, program info., etc. would be extremely helpful.

Depending on your Budget....they all range between 14.7k and 19.5k from Low end to High end....but all come with Standard Features like Power Windows / Locks / Cruise etc...plus there are some really great Finance Specials on the Civics right now too...
Lastly, the Legendary Honda "Fit and Finish" / Reliability will give you peace of mind over the long term.

I'd stay away from the Rabbit. VWs tend to be unreliable. The Fit is a very good car with a lot of versatility. The Yaris is good as far as entry-level cars go, but there are better choices for just a little bit more.

Most hondas, if properly maintain, can last to more than 200,000 miles, even 300,000 miles. Make sure the car is in good condition, use carfax, and make sure to get a mechanic to check the engine of the car, and the body.

Some of the main things to look for on a High-Milage Used Honda would be the Following:
Timing belt has been replaced...every 100-120k Miles
Engine Mounts / Ball Joints / Transmission / Regular oil changes performed
A/C Blows Cold
Other than that, make sure that the Body Panels still have the Original VIN Sticker on them and of course get a Carfax report....then you should be ok.
Get the right kind of Honda, and it will outlast many New cars that are on the road right now...

In my opinion, the seats were the most comfortable for the price range %26amp; size of the vehicle and it drives more like a large car than a truck [but it will haul as necessary].
When I bought mine 4 years ago, it was 1.5 years old and I paid about 18k from a dealership.

There are dealerships here in Hampton Roads that will help people, but they tend to rip customers off with their car prices and excessive interest. Try going to a credit union or a bank to see if they can help you first.

Alright so you could definitely get a Chevy Cobalt SS Sedan. Used ones are under 10K I've seen tons of 'em on ebay and craigslist.

I did drove Cobalt for some time. No complaints. Nice car. I had the base version that seemed underpowered. I am sure the SS version more than compensates.
With $12000 budget and say $2000 for trade you should be able to get a Cobalt easy. If you can do your homework %26amp; are hard nosed, you can get an SS for that price.
Reply:Cobalts are very cheap to fix. This is because they are the third best selling car in the US, and the fact that they are made in the US by US Parts.
My current car is a 2002 GMC Envoy and I would NOT recommend it due to gas prices. I get 14 MPG on Mid Grade and Highway. It is not too good, not to mention this cars build quality. Alright so you could definitely get a Chevy Cobalt SS Sedan. Used ones are under 10K I've seen tons of 'em on ebay and craigslist.

I did drove Cobalt for some time. No complaints. Nice car. I had the base version that seemed underpowered. I am sure the SS version more than compensates.
With $12000 budget and say $2000 for trade you should be able to get a Cobalt easy. If you can do your homework %26amp; are hard nosed, you can get an SS for that price.
Reply:Cobalts are very cheap to fix. This is because they are the third best selling car in the US, and the fact that they are made in the US by US Parts.
My current car is a 2002 GMC Envoy and I would NOT recommend it due to gas prices. I get 14 MPG on Mid Grade and Highway. It is not too good, not to mention this cars build quality. Can someone with a suspended license co sign for a car? I don't know if varies from state to state but I live in Texas.

It's the driver they are more concerned about... you would be the primary owner... the co-signer is only involded if you don't pay.
Some dealership will want to make a copy of the co-signer's license, and unless it has been branded to say "suspended" they will not even take it into consideration. If it does, they may require an affidavit stating that they are not out on bail or something like that to where they would not be able to pay for the car if you default on the loan.

You may want to talk to the Lender directly and see what they say....but Im sure there is not much wiggle room there.

On the other hand you take a honda civic that gets good gas mileage, it is more desirable in today's market and would be worth more in relation to kbb. Just because kbb states its worth a certain amount doesn't necessarily mean thats what it's worth.

Long story short, my beloved Olds Alero was totaled last night when a deer jumped off a ledge on the interstate.
So now I've got to find a new car much, much sooner than I had expected, and I haven't got a clue where to start. I'd like to upgrade to something a little more suitable for my lifestyle than the Olds, although I will miss the sportiness.

I sold my 2008 car to some guy. two weeks later, he found out it was a prior lemon car.
True, I knew it was lemoned before and didn't tell the guy, but he never asked. we signed a bill of sale and I stated "as-is". Now he wants me to buy the car back. Do I have to or not? Before he told me he was a dealer, now he tells me he is not a dealer. What is the difference? Do I have to buy the car back?

It's your responsibility to inform the buyer. There is no "well, he never asked" involved.
You can buy the car back, or he can sue you for failure to notify, which makes your sale basically a fraud.....

Where can I buy a 2CV Charleston?
I am looking to buy a Black and Grey 2CV charleston and fullfill a long time dream of having one of these beautiful cars of my own. If anyone can assist I would be grateful, even if anyone knows any garages that sell them or know someone selling one private. i'm looking for a new car. i'm basically looking for a cheap reliable car that i can drive around for 3 years while i go to school.
after the 3 years, i plan on buying a new, nicer car (i'll be making more money).
if this is the case, would leasing be the smart thing to do?

Most people who lease don't realize what all the added charges are. For example going over miles. You aren't allowed many free miles, and most people end up paying more on a lease car than it was worth when they go to turn it in. They spent as much as they would if they were to buy a car, yet they have no equity.
You are far better off just purchasing a 10 yr old car and driving it until the wheels fall off. Then buy your new car in 3 yrs.
Reply:If you can afford the payments on a 3-year loan, I'd suggest buying. Then you'll have some equity in it for a trade in. If you can't afford those payments, then leasing is a viable option.

As a rule u never own the thing and it would be wise to buy a small cheap car that u can turn around in a few yr ( something the economy) will want in a few yrs cheap NEW make payments ( dealer are giving away cars- NEW ones) bc they are paying interest on them while they are sitting on their lot whereas used cars are doing nothing for them ( not costing them nothing to keep).
but some generic Japanese car hundi ( OR the like) That way you'll have no expenses and get a low interest rate on the new car payment,...That's going to be the best most prudent way to transport Ur self around, I hope this makes sense to ya !!

Reply:I would go with a used honda civic. They last for 200,000 miles or more without any serious problems. They barely depreciate and have excellent gas milage. If you bought a civic for let's say 7,000 and drove it for 3 years, you would be able to get half your money back after selling it. If you lease a vehicle you can only drive so many miles a year, baby the car , and then give it back with out gaining anything.
Reply:Never lease. It's a complete rip-off. Buy the cheapest car you don't mind being in for the next three years, and save along the way for the new car. At the end of the three years, you can sell a "cheap" car by-owner and possibly get most of your money back to put towards your new ride. I'm telling you, don't lease or you'll be more hamstrung to your payments than you'll want to be.
Did I mention, never lease a car.
Reply:i bought a saab 94 for 1600 last year. it's great and i got it on craigslist. it had 125k on it and it's got leather interior and a sunroof! it's a little dinged up on the right passenger door otherwise it looks really good. it saves me money cause i have no payments and my insurance is like 65 a month. used cars a great IF you do your homework. i looked for 3 months before i jumped on this one. i've had no problems so far (knock on wood). it'll last me at least another 3 or 4 years...

You will be paying just as much on a lease car as you will be on payments on a new one.
The good thing on a lease vehicle is that you have three options at the end of your lease 1 you can take it back and give the keys and walk away from it or 2. pay off the remainder
of the lease ( 1,800 to 2,400 ) some where around that area
Or this is the good part I liked when I leased my car.
You can turn the car in and drive off in that years new model..
They do have a restriction on the miles,, mine was I could not put on no more than 12,000 miles a year and what you put on over that you will pay like 45 cents a mile you run over.
But keep this in mind you always have a warranty on that car as long as you drive it on lease,, All you pay is for gas and I think they do the first 3 oil changes there self and you pay for them after that.. If you go that route see if they have what they
call the Smart Lease I know Chevrolet does that's where I got
mine ( 2005 Chevy cobalt ) and I liked that car.

If you really want a convertable chech out the Potiac solotice or the saturn version. They're cheap and top down. Or if you add some 3-5grand you can get a top down beetle or even a top down mini cooper. All of them have get good milelage.

In the end all the dirt comes out anyway, so you might as well walk in with it (if it exists) and save the guy the drill. If he gets a "good feeling" he might go to bat for you more. Some dealers (rare) will carry the down so that you can buy instead of lease. That would free you from end of lease fees (mileage,wear/tear,damage,maintenance etc. These type of charges at the end of a lease can be substantial. So in the end it might be possible, but it won't be easy. Just some info to ponder.

Well there is no "cheapest payment" cause you could put a down payment of $19,000 on a car thats worth $20,000 and your payment for 3 years would be like $30 a month.
if your asking what a GOOD down payment would be, than i'd say putting $5,000 down on a Honda Civic that you get for $17,000. Say you have excellent credit and the dealer gives you 3% interest, and your sales tax is 7.75%, well than with a 60 month payment plan your payments would be about $240 a month. Which isn't bad for a new car payment.

Well there is no "cheapest payment" cause you could put a down payment of $19,000 on a car thats worth $20,000 and your payment for 3 years would be like $30 a month.
if your asking what a GOOD down payment would be, than i'd say putting $5,000 down on a Honda Civic that you get for $17,000. Say you have excellent credit and the dealer gives you 3% interest, and your sales tax is 7.75%, well than with a 60 month payment plan your payments would be about $240 a month. Which isn't bad for a new car payment.

When you are buying a new car from a respectable lot, I don't think that they would turn a trade-in down too often. Let's face it they want you to purchase the new car/truck so they will do almost anything to make that happen. The down side is the condition of the car/truck that you are trading in. If it is not worth a lot then they will only give you a small amount for it. See car dealerships don't make that much money off of the trade in because in most cases they sell the car/truck to another dealer of only used cars. So due to that transaction sometimes they will consider how much they can re-sell it for and that might be the price that they give to you on the trade in. Sometimes it is better to sell the car/truck yourself then use that money to get your car.
Try it though...go to your dealership of choice and ask how much they will give you as a trade in value. Shopping around might be good to do in this case too!

Have you taken possession of a newer car and now the dealer is calling saying that the trade-in has problem? Or has the bank come back and denied the loan and the dealership is trying to get you to bring it back to "unwind the deal"? If this is happening you do need to take it back unless the bank wants more down payment. The trade-in value as far as that is concerned should not change, unless they were going to have it appraised first. All of this should show up in your vehicle buyers order (contract). If this has not been completed than they have only loaned you a newer car so far.
Try it though...go to your dealership of choice and ask how much they will give you as a trade in value. Shopping around might be good to do in this case too!

Are chryslers reliable cars?
I've been offered a '99 chrysler sebring convertible with 61k. Is this something to look into? Or should I stick with looking for a japanese which is what I have been doing - toyota, mazda, nissan, etc.

I would make sure that the transmission has been serviced. As far as convertibles are concerned, the Sebring is on the top of the list for construction. A car is only as good as the care given by the previous owner.

But coming from a quality assurance/automotive background the Japanese made cars are of a higher quality standard due to strict manufacturing guidelines that are followed during the manufacturing assembly. The benefit of buying a used Chrysler is that they depreciate like crazy. The same year and mileage Toyota will be much more expensive. So used Chryslers are very good values.

My parents and I decied to buy a car. So we did some reaserch on the internet, and we found a car dealership in Stone Moutain Ga. So we took a ride to the car dealership to see if we could find a car, and we found something that we liked. So my mother put a down payment on the car in order for the salesmen to hold the car. Ok so we made the agreement with the salesmen that we would make the remaining payments until the car was paid for. Then about 2 days later we go back up there and he has sold the car after making the agreement with us, saying that he would not. So he promises to find us another car but better. So he dose, we see and like the car and we make some more payments, and he lets us take the car home but he dose not give us the title. He gave us a 30 day lisense and in the 30 days of having the car the motor goes out. Now the salesmen don't wanna do anything about getting the car fixed. What should I do clearly they sold us a lemon.

Make sure you have them add it to the contract because the same thing happened to me. It wasn't a $30K car but it was brand new nonetheless and the sticker/badge really bothered me. I told the dealer I wanted it removed when I came to pick up the car in a few days. Sure enough, the badge was still there when I got there and he said I could just remove it myself. It wasn't a deal breaker for me but it was more of an inconvenience for me to do it myself...I just went online to figure out how to remove it.
Most of the time, it's just a sticker that can be sliced off. Use a piece of dental floss and slide it behind the badge. In a back and forth motion while pulling down, use it to slice through the glue that's keeping the badge on the car. Once the badge is off, you can rub the spot with some Goo Gone and it will loosen up the remaining glue and can be wiped off easily.
If it's a higher-end car like a Mercedes, sometimes those badges are riveted to the trunk. Make sure it's not riveted before you try to remove it. If it is, then you should have the dealer remove it before you pick up the car.

When I bought my car the dealer wrote on a recipt they would fix cel if it reapperaed. About 3 days after having car the cel came back on, I took it to there mechanic about 3 times replaced several parts, everytime I took it they said drive it for 2 weeks or so to cycle through the ecu. Well its been about 2 months now and there are still cel's. I have about 500 miles on the car and after renewing my temp plates twice I had to go get echeck. In the echeck parking lot I disconnected battery so that it would pass and now hes saying it passed echeck, its over now. Just curious to see if I have any rights here considering I have in writing that he would fix cel. THanks for any input

I used to live in NY and the New York State New Car Lemon Law, General Business Law, Section 198-a, provides that if, after a reasonable number of attempts, a dealer cannot repair a new vehicle within the first 18 months or two years of delivery of that vehicle to the consumer, then the consumer is entitled to a refund of the purchase price or a replacement vehicle. The law presumes that a reasonable number of attempts have been made if the dealer has made four repair attempts for the same problem or the vehicle has been out of service for 30 days or more within the first 18,000 miles or two years. However, this does not mean that you have to have four repair attempts or meet the 30 day requirement to have a claim under the New York State New Car Lemon Law. So long as a "reasonable number" of repair attempts have been made, you may seek relief. Consequently, you should always consult with a lawyer when evaluating your legal rights. This law also provides a mechanism for recovering attorney fees.
I had a problem with my Subaru that rendered it un-driveable each time the part failed and had to be towed to a dealership each time. It happened 3 times within a month's time frame. The 4th time it was in the shop, I contacted a Lemon Law lawyer in my state and explained my case to them and they accepted the case. Technically, I was over the limit in mileage to qualify for a "lemon" (I had 25K miles on the car) but it was still under the new car warranty. I wrote to Suabaru of America to demand a new car since it was obvious that they could not fix my car properly. My lawyers had already started processing the case and I'm not sure if that gave Subaru some pressure but before I got my car back, they had sent a specialist from Subaru headquarters to diagnose my problem. After I got my car back, it never happened again. I was happy as a clam that I got my car back and there were no issues so I thought the case was closed. Apparently, my lawyers were still pursuing the case. About 1 year later, I received a letter and a check from my lawyers awarding me $1500 from Subaru for my troubles. I could either take the money or pursue the lemon law and try to get a new car. I just opted to take the money since my car was driving fine after the last incident.
Since your car is much newer than mine and they still haven't fixed the problem, I'd start searching for a Lemon Law lawyer in your state. I found mine through the link below. My lawyers recouped their fees from Subaru too...nothing out of my pocket.

I would have told them to keep the car and give me another car in place of it or give me car to drive and call me when you know you have it fixed.

if it is a used car they do as little as possible to get you out of there hair..Then if you buy a new car they will bend over backwards to get you in it because, the new cars is where they make there money or the big bucks at.and the heck with the people that only has the money to buy a used car..
